Bedside Beauty

I've always used my bedside table as a place to store some of my most loved items. I keep  my favourite beauty items on hand too, so I can easily access them before I go to sleep or when I wake up. I love peeking into the lives of others and seeing what beauty products they use or what trinkets they hold dear to them and I thought you might enjoy seeing which things I use.

Straight away you can probably tell I have an infatuation with La Tour Eiffel! I learnt French for many years and it is my dream to go there one day and see the real thing. I enjoy looking at this picture before I go to bed and think about how I'm going to get there. The Eiffel Tower wire ornament was given to me for my birthday last year from a friend. It's the perfect spot to hang a pair of sparkly earrings before jumping into bed from a long night out ;)

I keep a travel size tube of Clarins Moisture Rich Body Lotion and Hand and Nail Treatment Cream handy so I can hydrate my skin before going to sleep. These are my favourite body and hand creams of all time and having them easily accessible is great for my routine. I bought the scented candle about a month ago as it contains lavender which I thought would be great to help me get to sleep. I don't have a lot of trouble falling asleep but the smell is amazing! Really relaxing. I enjoy soy wax scented candles the best and I think this one was half price from my pharmacy. Bargain price + cute packaging = Happy Lizy!

I think I got those earrings for $3 from Diva three years ago. They are one of my favourite pairs of earrings and I can't believe they've lasted me so long! I can't live without my Avene Thermal Spring Water spray. This one is the ginormous bottle (it works out better economically) and I use it instead of toner sometimes before moisturising or to blast myself with on mornings where I can't wake up (read: all the time). It's so good for dry or sensitive skin, sunburn, mens shaving rash, heaps of things. It contains naturally occurring minerals and extracts and is so good for skin. The white and black perfume containers came from my Oma who brought them back from somewhere like Greece or Egypt 20 years ago. She gave them to me not so long ago and they are one of my favourite things ever. The bottom compartment still contains some solid perfume which smells divine, really musky and I can just imagine the market she must have bought them from.

I bought the glass dove 'plate' from my local second-hand shop for a dollar. I think it's supposed to be a Christmas decoration but I love it for holding pretty miniature perfumes, a couple of rings, my favourite lip balm and my watch at the end of the day. I also bought the black tray from the same shop and paid a dollar for that too.

What do you keep on hand near your bed? Do you love candles too? Let me know :)

Thanks Darling, You Shouldn't Have....

I was going to be posting a Sunday Scent today but something more exciting happened!
The gorgeous Albertine from the blog Lovely Rose Petal gave me the Liebster Blog Award!

The award is given to up-and-coming blogs that you love with 200 followers or less.

There are some rules:

1. You must link back to the person who gave the award to you (as a small thanks :).
2. Post eleven things about yourself (the version I was given says this, I know some of the other versions don't. It's fun, play along!).
3. Answer the questions the person giving you the award has set for you.
4. Create 11 questions for the people to answer that you have given the award to.
5. Choose people to give the award to and link them in your post.
6. Go to their blog and tell them.
7. You can't give the award back to the blogger who gave it to you (even though y'all think I'm that great right? ;).

11 things you didn't know about me!

1.  I've half-done a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology... It wasn't really what I thought it was going to be like so next year I'm going back to uni to study PR/Journalism/Media with the end goal of beauty writing/editing and PR working overseas.
2. My favourite band is Fleetwood Mac. Yes that's right people. Thanks parents for the endless car rides playing the Rumours album while I was a child.
3. Next month I am turning 22 on the 22nd. Been waiting my whole life for that ;).
4. My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I love me a bit of Mr. Darcy.
5. I have never been overseas. Crazy! My boyfriend is the complete opposite, he's been everywhere! We are planning a trip soon to either Thailand or Australia to see some friends.
6. I make the best Cream of Chicken Soup that you'll ever eat in your life.
7. I went to 4 primary schools, 2 intermediates and 3 colleges. We moved a lot.
8. My blog is actually nearly 2 years old but I've only just got the confidence in myself to post regularly.
9. I still get books out from the library. The one in my city is really cool!
10. My favourite movie is Grease.
11. I sing allllll the time even though I'm so bad at it! My boyfriend and best friend can attest to that.

Albertine's questions:

1. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you choose to have with you?
Okay, I'm going to assume here that I have clean drinking water and food etc. I'd take SPF 50+ sunscreen, My boyfriend Chris and a mosquito net.
2. What food can you just not stand?
I hate cucumbers, mushrooms, onions.
3. Favourite season?
Ummm, Winter because it's my birthday and Summer because it's Christmas and warm!
4. Are you a morning or night person?
Probably a night person. I can't get up early because I stay up late doing useless stuff!
5. Favourite animal?
I've fallen in love with this breed of dog called a Pomsky. It's a Pomeranian cross with a Husky.
6. If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I'd like to be invisible! I could get into the movies for free and listen in on conversations!
7. What would you spend your money on if you won the lottery?
Best question ever, I think about this all day at work haha. I'd first buy myself a flash car like a BMW or Range Rover, then I'd pay off my student loan and then I'd go get my Mum and take us on a big round the world holiday! I'd buy a fancy house when I got home.
8. Favourite television show?
Right now I like GCB!
9. A quote you like?
I've got a couple, "We accept the love we think we deserve" and "Dreams don't work unless you do".

Project 10 Pan Progress

I never thought it'd be so hard just to use up what products I already own.
And I think I'm a serial shopper.

I've caught myself a LOT thinking about buying a new conditioner or lip balm etc only to remember that I already own 2834 of them and that I'm banned!

This week I used up the last of these three products.
Trust me that Palmolive Shower Milk lasted an age!
I also have about 4 back-ups of that Clarins moisturiser (it's my favourite).

Have you used anything up lately?

What I Do Differently

I often get asked for beauty tips and tricks and it's occurred to me that I do some things differently to the rest of you. Here are some things I was thinking of tonight.

001. I use two cleansers at night to remove my makeup and clean my skin. The ones I like are the Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel and Clarins Alpine Herbs Cleansing Milk. The gel transforms to an oil upon application (on a dry face) that is easy to spread around your face and then turns milky when you add water to wash it off. I always use a muslin cloth to remove this cleanser as I feel it gets all traces of my makeup off and works to lightly exfoliate my face too. It's the closest I'm going to get to the Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanse and Polish! I then use my Cleansing Milk to clean my skin after my makeup is removed. I warm the milk in my hands and then apply in a suction method over my face and neck. The products thickens and gently removes all impurities, it's what's known as Clarins' 'anti-pollution' cleansing method.

Gel                                         Oil                                     Milk
The Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel in action.

002. I use the Clarins Toning Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin to remove my Cleansing Milk and tone my skin rather than washing off the milk and then toning. I think that when it comes to cleansing milks this method is acceptable.

003. When my skin is still damp I apply my serums and moisturisers. I'm a big fan of the when-your-skin-is-still-damp method as you can get away with using less product and there is more 'slip' when you're massaging the products in therefore less tugging and pulling of the skin which ultimately means wrinkle prevention! With a bit of luck!

004. Once a week when I'm using one of my daily-esque face exfoliators in the shower I take a bit up into my hair and give my scalp a scrub. I believe I'm helping to keep my hair follicles free of product build up, skin cells and dry flaky bits thus allowing my hair to grow longer and healthier and improve the overall health of my scalp. It feels pretty good too, it's weird but give it a try!

005. A few times a week I'll mix a face oil concoction and give myself a facial massage at night. I'm considering doing a separate post on this because I've been obsessed lately. I'm learning all the acupressure points on my face and how to give myself a shiatsu massage.

006. I don't just have one shampoo and conditioner that I use everyday, rather I have several and I decide which ones I want to use on the day. The same goes for my skincare too; I have many moisturisers on the go at once. These are a few.

007. I sometimes mix my concealer with a little bit of eye cream to give a softer more hydrated look. Especially in winter, nobody likes a cakey look under their eyes!

008. I use two blushers everyday. A bronzy shade for under my cheekbones and a pinky shade for my apples. High maintenance - Maybe. Does it look more natural? - Yes.

009. I curl my eyelashes 3 or 4 times down the length of my lashes rather than just once at the roots as I find if I only curl them once, they crimp. If I do it multiple times down the length, they curl. I don't press too hard on the curlers either.

010. I don't 'pump' my mascara wand in and out of the tube before applying. It doesn't add any extra product to the brush, it just pushes air into the tube, drying out the product. Hello mascara that only lasts a week!

Do you do any of these things too? Leave me a comment with your tips.

The Fabulous Files - The Beauty Therapist

Who: Renei Kingi
What: Beauty Therapist and Skincare Expert
Where: New Zealand

What is your earliest makeup memory?
My Grandma only ever used Lancôme skincare and makeup and she wore all Chanel fragrance. When I was little I'd go and sit at her vanity and put on all of her products.

What was your first perfume?
Revlon Charlie and Clinique Happy. My dad brought them back from overseas for me when I was 10. I wasn't keen on the Charlie but from then on he always brought me back a bottle of Happy when he went away.

What is your signature scent now?
Armani Code for women.

Biggest hair disaster?
When I was about 13 I wanted bleached blonde highlights. It turned my black hair seaweed green!

What is your ultimate indulgence?
Decléor facials or a good microdermabrasion treatment.

What is your number one skincare tip?
Make sure you use a good exfoliator 1-2 times a week to remove all your dead skin cells and allow your moisturisers to absorb better.
(BBL note: Renei gave me heaps of tips so I'll share some more with you at the end.)

What was the last item of makeup you bought?
My Shiseido Perfect Smoothing Compact Foundation. I take it everywhere and I can't live without it! FYI I use shade I60.

Do you have a makeup wishlist for the future?
- Shiseido Future Solution LX Eye and Lip Contour Regenerating Cream. Expensive but good!
- YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres in shade 14 Fuchsia Dore.
- Shiseido Aromatic Sculpting Gel for the body. Amazing!
- Urban Decay Naked Palette (BBL note: She's seen mine and she wants one!)

What do you enjoy most about being a Beauty Therapist?
I love skincare and therefore doing facials. I know how good they feel and so I like to pass that on to others. Helping people with their skincare concerns interests me and I love seeing the results my clients get from a series of corrective treatments.

Any advice for people wanting to become a Beauty Therapist?
Do your research. Ring around and find out where salons prefer you to train. There's no point doing a long drawn out course if you aren't going to have the right qualifications at the end of it, especially if you want to work overseas. Also, make sure you have a passion for helping people and their concerns, it's obvious if you aren't interested and it'll set you apart from the rest.

Renei's other skincare tips:
- Don't use your day cream at night, the formulas are different and you don't need the SPF on at night.
- Use an eye cream as early as possible. Dehydration lines turn into fine lines and fine lines turn into wrinkles!
- Don't use heavily coloured or artificially fragranced items as many people are sensitive to these and can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage.

Thanks for chatting Renei!
Isn't she a darling?

Rapid Review: Kérastase Resistance

I've been using this Kérastase Resistance duo for 3.5 weeks now and thought I'd share my opinions with you. My boyfriend's sister actually purchased these in a set and used them a couple of times before deciding that she didn't like the way it made her hair feel. So this range wasn't 'prescribed' for me but I read the bottles and it sounded like what I'd be interested in. I'd just run out of the Kérastase Nutri Thermique conditioner which I love so I was hoping that I'd love this too.

What: Kérastase Resistance Bain de Force Shampoo and Ciment Anti-Usure Conditioner. For hair that is weakened and/or damaged, especially on the ends.
From the kerastase-usa.com website "The VITA-CIMENT® TOPSEAL technology combines Vita-Ciment Complex to reconstitute the intercellular cement, reconstruct the internal structure and consolidate the fiber core while the Vita-Topseal reconstitutes and coats the natural outer protective layer of the hair fiber."

Where: Hair. Shampoo all over, conditioner lengths only.

When: When I first started using it I could get away with washing my hair every 2 days now it's more like every day.

Why: Confession: I haven't had my hair cut in a long time. I'm talking 2011. My ends are probably more split than the Grand Canyon. I kind of feel like if I just don't look at them that the problem will go away. *Booking a haircut first thing tomorrow*. Anyway, I thought this would help. The bottle said 'weakened, damaged lengths and ends'. Sign me up. Under my 'natural' brown colour lies 3 or 4 layers of bleach (you can read about my hair disasters here). I'm actually sporting unintended ombre hair! We should all be in agreement now that my hair, is in fact, neglected and weakened. Kérastase to the rescue? I'm not so sure...

How does it feel?: The first 2 days of use, my hair felt thick. Like I didn't need to wash it for a couple of days because it wasn't going to go limp and oily. I noticed it still felt soft but wasn't as shiny as my hair normally looks. Then it wasn't so thick, and my hair normalised. I think it does a good job of cleaning my hair but I don't think the conditioner is moisturising enough for me. Even though I have fine hair, I have a lot of it (apparently) and I prefer to use a really moisturising product on my lengths. One thing I have noticed while using this is that my hair is shedding like crazy in the shower. Like a clump in the bottom of the shower when I get out. My hair has never done that before. The funny thing is that I read all these reviews on these products and everyone was raving about how little their hair is falling out since using it...

01. I like using the product because I feel like it's doing more for my hair than a supermarket brand would (although I haven't used one of those since I was 15).
02. I like the smell and the consistency of the shampoo, however the conditioner isn't thick enough for me.
03. I wouldn't repurchase this, I'd buy something from the Nutritive range again.
04. Kérastase shampoos have impractical lids that screw completely off. You either need 3 hands or a shelf in your shower to hold both the lid and the bottle and pour some shampoo on your hand. However, the packaging is pretty.
05. I'm about medium happy with this product.

Thanks for reading!

The Fabulous Files - Me

I'd like to introduce you to a new series called 'The Fabulous Files', where I interview people I admire about all things beauty.

I thought I'd start the series answering the questions myself to get a feel for it.

Who: Lizy
What: Beauty Blogger at www.beautybylizy.blogspot.com
Where: New Zealand

What's your earliest makeup memory?
I remember watching my mum put her makeup on when I was very small. She had these fabulous fluffy pink makeup brushes that she used for powder and Revlon blushers.

What was your first perfume?
Aside from the kiddy roll on perfumes I had when I was 5, my Nana used to give me the last of her bottle of Elizabeth Arden 5th Avenue when she bought a new one.

What is your signature fragrance now?
These days I prefer J'adore EDP by Dior that my boyfriend has treated me to a couple of bottles of.

What was the last item of makeup you bought?
I haven't bought any makeup for a while! I did buy a great leather Napoleon brush roll that fits most of my makeup brushes though.

Do you have a makeup wishlist for the future?
I'm very keen to try the Teint Miracle foundation by Lancôme that I've heard good things about. I need to buy a new Urban Decay Primer Potion as well.

Biggest hair disaster?
I've had a couple of shockers. When I was seven I convinced my mum to let me get my hair cut reeeeaalllllyyyyy short (think Anne Hathaway's latest buzz do!). A couple of years ago I tried to go blonde. After 3 bleach attempts we realised that I was never going to shake the spun gold look.

Best beauty discovery?
Probably face serums? I just think they work overtime for your skin. In particular I like Clarins Multi Active Skin Renewal Serum or Clarins Hydraquench Serum if my skin is particularly dehydrated.

What is your ultimate indulgence?
A Guinot Hydradermie Facial. They use these machines that oxygenate your skin. A facial and a massage is ultra luxurious for me. Sometimes even taking 5mins out of my day to spend scrubbing and moisturising my body is an indulgence.

I hope you liked the first post in 'The Fabulous Files' series.
Keep coming back to see who I interview next!

Shopping My Stash

Since starting Project 10 Pan and finishing some of my much-loved products I've been 'Shopping my Stash' for products to replace them. Marc Jacobs Daisy is one of the lighter fragrances in my collection and I don't wear it all that often but since finishing my Chanel Chance Eau Tendre I've been testing it out.
It's early days but I'm liking it for a quick day-off-work spritz.

I've been dying to open this Lancôme Hydra Zen moisturiser that I've had for a little while, but wanted to wait until I finished my Clarins Hydraquench.

I normally have about 5 or 6 moisturisers on the go at once (what, don't you?) and just choose whichever one I feel my skin needs that day. Opening new beauty products is still one of life's little pleasures.

I love the texture and smell of this product so much. This is my second jar of this cream and I know it's going to last me a long time. You know, 'cause I have to use up the other 37,485 moisturisers I own!!

What can I say? I'm a sucker for the Lancôme Rose.

Have you recently re-discovered something you love?
- Lizy x

A review is coming shortly on these bad boys!
(You see what I did there, the cement and the 'ciment? Ha.Ha!)

P10P Progress

This morning I used up the last of two of my products that I'd been holding on to for a while. I don't believe in 'saving' my quality things for 'good', rather I like to use them regularly. There's no point owning something you're not going to use, however when you have a lot of products it can take a while to get through them all. I committed myself to Project 10 Pan and have kept my word by not buying a thing.

I offer up to the beauty graveyard Chanel Chance Eau Tendre and Clarins Hydraquench Cream. I liked you both very much and one day I may re-purchase you when your cousins are long gone.

I've made a conscious effort over the last couple of days to use up some smaller sized items I had. I'm not counting these towards my P10P total, but my sample drawer is thanking me for it!

I hope the next 8 products are as easy to use up!
What have you recently finished that you love?

Review: Lancôme Génifique

I'm a sucker for a serum.
You're preaching to the choir if you try to sell me one because I already understand the benefits.

01. They are much more concentrated than a moisturiser.
02. The lighter consistency means they soak in to your skin quicker and better and in most cases reaches the deeper layers of your skin.
03. They enhance the use of the rest of your skincare.
04. You can use less moisturiser if you apply it on skin that's still damp from a serum.
05. Often the most research is done on 'the most concentrated' product in a range.

I could go on all day. But I won't. Because I only want to talk about one serum today.
Lancôme Génifique.

I've been using this product for over a month now so I think I'm qualified to give you a decent review.
I use it after cleansing and toning (morning and night), and when my skin is about 90% dry I put on a little bit of the Génifique after warming it up in my hands. I use nearly one pump full. As I only have the 20ml size, one pump full may alter between the larger size bottles, mine dispenses two drops each pump.
I'm a good advocate for warming the product up in your hands before using it. This is a quick action to get the serum to your body temperature before applying, not a wasteful 5 minute rub-in where all the product is absorbed by your hands!
I also like to make sure my skin is marginally damp so the serum can spread over my entire face and neck without tugging or pulling and use a pat and press motion.
This is how I do it ;)

Now that you've all seen me without my makeup on I'll tell you what the product is supposed to do.
Lancôme Génifique is a Youth Activator Serum that is supposed to provide the correct environment for Youth Proteins to multiply and repair your DNA of damage so your skin looks 'youthful' again. I think you should know that this isn't a product for 'Old Ladies'. Anyone who wants their skin to look more youthful can use it. I'm using it under my regular Clarins skincare.

Génifique contains the key ingredients:
01. Bifida Ferment Lysate - This ingredient is second on the list after water indicating a good concentration. Supposed to help repair DNA.
02. Sodium Hyaluronate - My old friend. A molecule that can hold many, many, many times its own weight in water so is very hydrating.
03. Adenosine - A cell-communicating ingredient that drives a number of biological skin processes including protein synthesis.
04. Salicyloyl Phytosphingosine - Research has shown that this product is capable of repairing aged skin, including sun damage and wrinkles.

These are just a few of the good (and the not so good, Alcohol Denat) ingredients in Lancôme Génifique.
If I'm being honest there aren't too many more ingredients to it.

I like the way it feels on my skin. It has definitely plumped and smoothed my skin (Glycerin and Dimethicone??) and I feel like it is more hydrated (thanks, Sodium Hyaluronate!). I haven't noticed any reduction in my pigmentation though and that is one of the reasons why I'm using it. It does say on the box that after 8 weeks you regain the signature of younger looking skin though so I'll give it a few more weeks.

All in all I really like this product for the way my skin feels and looks and I would recommend it. In the future I would buy the 50ml size just because it is more economical for the price than the 20ml, but I wasn't sure if I was going to like it.

Do you use a serum? Which one?
